30 killed, 36 wounded in explosion at Algerian market
Algeria, Local, 7/6/2002

An Algerian security source said that 30 persons were killed and 36 wounded on Friday morning in a bomb explosion in "Wednesday market" 20 Km to the southern East of the capital Algiers at the al-Mteija agricultural plain.

The source explained that this explosion which resulted in the largest number of killings since the beginning of this year took place on Friday morning during this weekly market in this agricultural market at rush hour time. This operation took place at a time when Algeria is celebrating its 40th independence anniversary.

However, since the beginning of the current year, in addition to the sudden new wave of attacks in the capital Algiers, the acts of violence in Algeria resulted in killing 770 persons according to calculations made according to official figures or published by the press.

The new "prince of the armed Islamic group" Rasheed Abu Turab vowed to continue the extremist line of his predecessor Antar Zabrawi and others of the leaders of this group until the foundation of the Islamic state in Algeria. In the statement on the occasion of his appointment he said "no dialogue, no reconciliation. Rather blood, blood and the sword is the deciding element." Since the eruption of the acts of violence in Algeria in 192, the Algerian armed groups view all those who do not pursue its line as "non believers" and permit killing them. Since then more than 100,000 Algerians were assassinated, according to official statistics.
