Andalucian government projects to construct library in Mali to preserve manuscripts on Muslim presence in Andalucia
Regional, History, 7/2/2002

The Andalucian government is projecting to finance the construction of a library in Timbuktu, Mali, to preserve some 3,000 manuscripts related to the Muslim presence in Andalucia (southern Spain).

The city of Timbuktu harbors manuscripts of great historical value, related to the Muslim presence in Andalucia, said the Andalucian department of institutional relations.

The project was discussed at a meeting in Seville last week between regional minister and director of the Malian Fondo Kati library, Ismael Diadie.

Several intellectuals of international standing, including Literature Nobel Prize Jose Saramago, and Spanish writer, Juan Goytisolo, had called in a manifesto released recently for the preservation of these valuable manuscripts.
