Iraqi leadership signs rapprochement agreement with Kuwait
Iraq-Kuwait, Politics, 4/1/2002

Iraq, at top of its leadership levels has ratified the "rapprochement" declared last Thursday at the Beirut's Arab summit, with Kuwait.

The revolution's leadership council and Iraq's leadership of the ruling "Baath party" on Saturday evening expressed in a joint meeting presided over by the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein their satisfaction over the positive results attained to solving the "complex" of the Iraqi- Kuwaiti case.

However, the expression of such a satisfaction at highest leadership level in Iraq falls on the wake of the remarkable closeness declared in Baghdad, Riyadh and Kuwait by the end of the Arab summit. The closeness was attained after Iraq vowed, in writing, for the first time not to repeat the invasion of Kuwait which it had occupied in 1990.

Moreover, a text of a settlement based on documents given by each of the two countries stated that "Iraq has to honor Kuwait's sovereignty and ensure its security." However, this progress in the Iraqi- Kuwaiti file opened the way before the decrease of tension in the relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, the main Arab Gulf states. The deputy chairman of the Iraqi revolution leadership council and chairman of the Iraqi delegation to Beirut's summit embraced the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz amid warm applause from the delegation at the inauguration of the final session of the summit. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are the only two Gulf states which do not have diplomatic relations with Iraq since the beginning of the Gulf crisis in 1990- 1991.

On the other hand, the Kuwaiti foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah told the Kuwaiti daily al-Watan in its Sunday's issue:" our first interest is on liberating the Kuwaiti prisoners and missing." Kuwait says that there are 605 persons who have the Kuwaiti nationality or other who are considered missing or prisoners in Iraq. Iraq, on the other hand, admitted it arrested persons but lost their traces along the way. Iraq, on the other hand, says 1142 of its citizens are missing.
