Jerusalem patriarchy denounces Israel's dealing with archbishop Atallah Hanna
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/22/2002

The Greek-Orthodox patriarchy in Jerusalem expressed in a statement issued on Thursday its "denunciation and condemnation over Israel's suspension of Archmandrite Dr. Atallah Hanna at King Hussein bridge between Jordan and the West Bank upon his return back from Beirut, for five hours in a very racist and provocative way."

The patriarchy also expressed its regret over the demand of the Israeli government from the patriarchy to fire Hanna from his post as a spokesman for the church and to alienate him from Jerusalem -- the headquarters of his church service -- and considered this measure as a grave violation to its sovereignty in running its affairs."

Worthy mentioning that Atallah Hanna has been directing strong criticism against the Israeli occupation and practices in the occupied lands. He criticized the Israeli practices during a conference he attended last week in Beirut on Jerusalem.
