Yemen: no more carrying weapons in the Yemeni cities
Yemen, Politics, 2/7/2002
The Yemeni government on Tuesday announced banning carrying fire weapons in the Yemeni cities where the tribes own tremendous amounts of weapons.
A statement circulated by the Yemeni News Agency said that the Yemeni cabinet issued during its weekly meeting on Tuesday stated to ban the carrying of weapons or to move it or even show it inside the cities of Sanaa and the other main cities.
The Yemeni cabinet excluded the official security guards from this decision and stressed that the decision also states to prevent the entry of weapons to the government's utilities in Sanaa and the Yemeni cities in all Yemeni provinces and to the centers of directorates and praying sides.
The Cabinet underlined the importance of discussing the law pertinent to organizing, owning or having weapons forwarded by the government to the parliament by the end of 1997 in order to discuss, ratify it and to give this law priority in the discussions.
The Yemeni ministry of the interior estimates that Yemeni citizens have some 60 million pieces of weapon at an average of three pieces for each person of various ages.
