US approves re-financing the Iraqi National Congress
Iraq-USA, Politics, 2/1/2002
The US government has approved the financing of the opposition Iraqi National Congress which seeks to topple the Iraqi President.
Most of the sums to the Iraqi opposition were suspended by the US over differences between the Iraqi National Congress and the US state department over calculations on sums of money the Iraqi organization has received in the past. An official at the US state department said: "we have resumed the financing at previous levels." Another American official said that the US under secretary of state Richard Armitaj approved the resumption of the financing.
American officials said that the Iraqi National Congress and the US state department have not yet settled problems relating to "auditing of calculations " but will continue working concerning them even with full resumption of financing.
An American official said that the Iraqi opposition National Congress will receive USD 800,000 per month for the three coming months in compensation of the reduced payment approved earlier, estimated at USD 500,000 per month, the Iraqi opposition received in January.
Members of the opposition Iraqi congress are subjected to the criticism of the American officials describing them as "the revolutionaries of seats," as they work from London and lack the influence inside Iraq. Members of this Iraqi congress call on Washington to move against the regime of Saddam Hussein the same way as it moved against Taliban.
