The rise of Christianity in Syria
Syria, History, 5/5/2001

Syria is written in History as the cradle of Jesus mission of peace and love, from where it spread all over the world.

Damascus witnessed the great shift in missionary activity.

When Saul, the tax collector who tormented and persecuted Jesus followers, reached south of Damascus, on his way from Jerusalem, he lost his eye-sight. He had a vision calling him to stop tormenting believers and to believe in the mission of Christ.

In Damascus, Annnias the apostle, baptized Saul who believed in Christianity, and his eye- sight returned to him. When the Jews chased him to kill him because he converted, the believers took him to the Damascus wall at the gate of Kissan ( Bab Kissan), and lowered him in a basket by night to escape to Jerusalem, then from there to Antioch where he became Paul the Messenger, a leading herald of Christianity, and owner of Paul's Epistles in the New Testament.

Syria is the first cradle of Christianity. Its cities, Damascus, Jerusalem, al-Raha and Antioch became missionary centers and the power of Antioch extended through the area from the Southern part of Asia Minor to the Sinai Peninsula.

The Christian Church rituals developed in Damascus and spread by missionaries and heralds to Europe and the world.

Syria's abundance of edifices remains pertaining to the early Christian era is a standing proof that Syria had its role in shaping the history of human civilization, having lived a period of peace and prosperity between the fourth and sixth centuries when Antoich was the asylum of the Church and the residence of its patriarch.
