Iraqi opposition issue a new weekly
Iraq, Politics, 2/12/2001

The Iraqi split Mishaan al-Jabouri who lives in Syria said on Sunday that his new weekly will call for a peaceful democratic change in Iraq as the Iraqi regime is in need of reforming itself.

Al-Jabouri who presides over the Iraqi " al-Watan" party which has Damascus as a headquarters said that his paper which is called the " other direction" will convey a message to the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein expressing views concerning taken decisions and or proposes to him another view point.

Al-Jabouri added that the paper will professionally and to a great extent deal with news coming from Iraq and that the paper will issue every thing positive and negative He indicated that the philosophy of his party has changed since its foundation in 1995 in Jordan as the part then aimed at toppling Saddam Hussein, however, Saddam's policy now need a democratic change. He stressed that his party is not linked to any groups of the Iraqi opposition who got American aids for toppling Saddam Hussein.

He also stressed that his paper will be the first to express the views of the Iraqis by calling for making a peaceful democratic change in Iraq. He noted that his party will not call for toppling the regime not threatening the ruling system but calls on the Iraqi regime to reform itself.

Al-jabouri explained that members of his party are not hirelings for the Americans or to any other state seeking to do harm for Iraq, noting his party's readiness to work from inside Iraq in case it is permitted to do so.

Al-Jabouri indicated that his paper which is registered in Holland will be printed in Britain, Holland and Lebanon and will be published in Arabic and will call for building the state of establishments and ensuring political and civilians freedoms for the Iraqi people.

He described his party as a liberal party which speaks in the name of the " Sunni" majority in the downtown of Iraq and that he is one of the relatives for the former Iraqi ambassador to Tunisia Hamid al-Jabouri whose political asylum to Britain in 1993 was a great embarrassment to Saddam's regime.
