Eritrea warns Ethiopia from violating Algiers agreement
Eritrea-Ethiopia, Politics, 1/9/2001
Eritrea ambassador in Cairo Muhammad Omar Mahmoud has warned against any attempt by Ethiopia to retreat from implementing the peace agreement signed in Algiers on December 12 to end border wars between the two sides that lasted for two years in which tens of thousands were killed.
Mahmoud said: We are committed too implementing the agreement. But if the Ethiopians want to retreat their position will not be proper before the international community. He noted Eritrea's right to defend its lands and sovereignty.
Replying to a question on his expectations to implement the agreement by Ethiopia, he said " at any rate, the Ethiopian withdrawal will be made after completing the arrival of all peace keeping forces. He added that Ethiopia knows well that signing the Algiers agreement came in the presence of international observers and the African unity organization and that tracking back this agreement will make them ( the Ethiopians ) in a difficult position.
Meantime, the International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC has announced that Ethiopia released 976 Eritreans it held during its borders war with the Neighbor.
