Algeria-Israel, Politics, 6/19/2000

Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika concluded his visit to France on Saturday in a meeting with a delegation representing the Jewish community on France.

During the meeting the Algerian President expressed his readiness to recognize Israel and establish remarkable relations with it in order to take part ( Israel) in the development of the region. He added that this can be made if peace is reached on the Syrian and Palestinian tracks.

Meantime, the chairman of the representation council for the Jewish establishments in France and the European Jewish conference which includes 38 Jewish European communities Henry Hidenburg said " we are on the road of reconciliation with Algeria. Hidenburg explained that the Algerian President linked in his statements about recognition of Israel, with two preconditions relating to the ME peace process, They are settling the Israeli- Palestinian and the Israeli-Syrian tracks of negotiations.

Hidenburg indicated that the meeting which brought back Butaflika and the French Jews officials lasted more than one hour after it was scheduled to be only half one hour was held in " friendly and frank atmospheres" and that talks basically dealt with conditions in the Middle East, besides that the Algerian Jews who compose one third of the French- Jewish community of 700,000 members reminded the Algerian president of their historical ties with their homeland Algeria.
