On Israeli- Chinese relations

The Israeli ambassador to China Orana Meir on Monday described the visit to be made by Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Israel on April 12 as a very important event for Israel and for Israeli-Chinese relations.

Xinhua (the Chinese news agency) on Monday quoted the Israeli ambassador as saying in an interview with the local Chinese press that Israel and China have developed excellent relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two sides in 1992.

The Israeli ambassador described China as one of the most important states in the world, adding that Israel considers the Chinese president as a "great leader for a great country."

She stated that Israel wants to share its experience in the agricultural field with China, adding that the Israeli companies had started to sell agricultural equipment to Beijing in 1999.

She said that several agricultural companies have started investment at the present in Chinese- Israeli agricultural projects in China.

The Israeli ambassador also expressed her conviction that high-tech Israeli companies will invest in China in order to expand cooperation between the two sides.

Concerning the role played by China in the Middle East peace process, the Chinese ambassador said that China enjoys excellent relations with Israel and all the Arab states, describing this as a "very important thing."

During his visit to Israel, the Chinese president will meet with Israeli President Ezer Weizman and Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Two agreements will be signed between the two sides on cooperation in the fields of economy and education.
