Marriages and divorce rates in Syria
Syria, Culture, 1/27/2000

Once again Damascus precedes other Syrian provinces in marriage and divorce rates to prove that the Damascenes are the first to fall in love as well as to get bored of marriage ties very soon.

Data of the central bureau of statistics indicates that the number of marriages registered until the beginning of 1999 reached for each 12 marriages for every 1,000 citizens in Damascus, while registered divorce cases reported 19% for the same period.

Next comes the province of Damascus countryside where 9 marriages were registered pers 1,000 citizens, and then come the provinces of Homs, Lattakia and Sweida with 8 registered marriages per thousand. 7 per thousand was the rate in the provinces of Aleppo, Hama, Idleb, al-Raqqa, while it was 6 per thousand in Deir Ezz Zour and al-Hassaka, and in al-Quneitra 3 per one thousand.

Concerning divorce, Quneitra came in second (11%), then comes Damascus countryside and Lattakia provinces (9%), Aleppo, and Sweida (8%), Hama and Deir Ezz Zour (7%), Homs, Idleb and Tartous (6%), Daraa (5%) and al-Raqqa (3%). All these divorce averages are calculated from the number of registered marriages.

It seems from the said rates that people in the provinces of al-Hassaka and al-Raqqa are more committed to their marriages, possibly due of the drastic need in such an agricultural society for the wife and the children to work in the land.
