First campaign against Iraq's transitional governing council
Imams of the Sunni mosques in Baghdad yesterday launched a campaign against the transitional Iraqi Governing Council calling on Iraqis not to recognize it and to reject its decisions, while a commission for their scholars criticized the "sectarian and ethnic" composition of the council which "gives a certain sect a majority at the expense of the Iraqi people group and without a referendum."

One American soldier killed, 611 Iraqi, including 62 former officials detained
The US army yesterday announced the killing of one of its soldiers in an attack by the Iraqi resistance, and that 611 Iraqi persons were arrested in a new operation for its forces, at a time when the largest rescue operations for the American wounded has started since Vietnam war.

Iraqi ambassador in China refuses to leave the embassy
The former Iraqi ambassador to China, Muwafaq al-Ani, has refused to leave the building of the Iraqi embassy in Peking and ignored instructions from the occupation administration in Iraq to return back to Baghdad in mid June, according to news reports.

The Iraqi police have arrested the correspondent of al-Jazira TV in al-Ramadi together with a photographer and a driver working for al-Jazira office in the city. The police accused the correspondent of provoking violence.

Okaz: Sabah al-Ahmad: we should forget Iraq's aggression against Kuwait
The prime minister of the new Kuwaiti government, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has drawn the outlines of his internal and external policy, mainly concentrating on Kuwait's Arab orientation and the desire to close the file of the past with Iraq, and to remark that the US will keep its military presence in Kuwait but the number of its troops will be decided following the formation of a government in Baghdad.

Iraqi resistance attacks; one American killed; plane survives ground-to-air missile
The Iraqi national resistance yesterday intensified attacks on the anniversary of Saddam Hussein's coming to power in the country. A series of operations were carried out resulted in killing one American soldier and wounding 7. Washington suspends Russian oil contracts with Saddam's regime
