Moroccan contingent fullfils exemplary action in Kosovo
Morocco, Culture, 12/31/1999
The Moroccan contingent, deployed in Kosovo part of the KFOR, is accomplishing an exemplary action that earned Morocco the esteem and gratitude of Kosovars.
The contingent is braving the cold and the omnipresent potential of explosion in the Albanian province to offer a humanitarian assistance to the local population.
The Moroccan unit is the sole contingent providing medical and social assistance to Kosovars, while those of France, Danmark, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan are in charge of peace-keeping operations.
In order to fulfill its mission, the contingent converted an old factory into a hospital in Mitrovitca (45 km north of Prestina). It also operates a medical center in the mining town of Trepca, near Mitrovitca.
The team is made up of 24 physicians, 36 nurses, 60 paramedics and 40 staffers and technicians.
The Mitrovitca 60-bed hospital has two surgery wards, a medical lab and a radiology and echography wing. Five deliveries can be made daily at the facility which also affords four surgeries daily.
Since its opening on Dec. 21, the hospital has admitted an average 60 patients daily.
"We thank the Moroccan contingent for the services it renders and for its unmatched contribution," said Taher Kelnendi, a Kosovar who brought his son to the hospital from a neighboring village.
"The Moroccans, who came to help us, did a lot for us," he said.
