Demirel assures steadfastness of his country's stance toward Cyprus
Turkey, Politics, 12/30/1999
Turkish President Soleiman Demirel assertedTurkey's adherence to its stance, which calls for the existence of two independent countries, each of which enjoys equal sovereignty on the island of Cyprus to reach a just and peaceful settlement to the Cypriot case.
This came in press statements made by president Demirel yesterday after receiving the chief of the Turkish Cypriots, Raouf Denktash, at the conclusion of his visit to Turkey, which lasted two days.
Demirel also said that the Greek Cypriot side that exists in southern Cyprus has no sovereignty in northern Cyprus and that if the existence of northern Cyprus is accepted as a reality the way will be opened in front of solving the Cypriot case.
