Repression not enough to stop clandestine immigration
Morocco, Politics, 12/30/1999
Interior Minister Ahmed Midaoui said Wednesday repressive measures were not enough to stop illegal immigration and that constant and serious action was required to put an end to the phenomenon which hurts Moroccan pride.
Answering an oral question in Parliament, Midaoui stressed the need for development projects, economic growth and security as key factors in stopping immigration. Military checkpoints are now operating in the area, he said, calling for cooperation from Spain to dismantle networks exporting illegal labor to Europe.
