Sudanese- Ethiopian agreement to build border roads

Sudanese and Ethiopian delegations have held a meeting in the border city of Mattama within the framework of the efforts exerted by Addis Ababa and Khartoum to develop their relations.

The participants in the meeting decided to build roads that link the border cities between the two countries with the objective of encouraging border trade and the movement of citizens.

The Ethiopian state-run Herald daily said that Sudanese Minister of Communications and Roads al-Hadi Bashri signed an agreement with Ethiopia's deputy communication minister, adding that the agreement called for constructing a road linking the cities of Azizo, Mattama and al-Qadaref. The Ethiopian paper quoted Bashri as saying that some 118 km will be constructed from the city of al-Qadaref towards the Ethiopian- Sudanese borders which are 175 km from the city.

He stated that construction of the road will be completed in one year.

For his part, the Ethiopian deputy minister said his country built 50 km out of 175 km of the road which links Azizo and al-Mattama.

Ethiopia and Sudan also agreed yesterday on opening their joint borders to trade movement after they were closed for more than four years.
