Morocco renews attachment to U.N. plan for Sahara
Morocco-UN, Politics, 12/29/1999

Morocco has renewed attachment to the United Nations settlement plan for the Sahara.

"Morocco will continue to fully adhere to the plan, as long as the United Nations secretary-general backs this plan through a fair, democratic and transparent implementation," Moroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Mohammed Benaissa told a local daily.

The U.N. plan for the Sahara provides for holding a self-determination referendum to determine whether the Sahara, a former Spanish colony, sets up on its own or remains part of Morocco.

Benaissa said he had met with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan "to present him proofs and evidences" showing that the identification of would-be voters in the referendum is unfolding outside the rules.
