Palestinian official in Damascus today
Syria-Syria, Politics, 12/29/1999
Well-informed Palestinian sources in Damascus told the Lebanese daily al-Nahar that PLO executive committee member Yasser Amro is expected to arrive in Damascus today and that he will ask the Syrian officials to restore life to Syrian- Palestinian relations, including the possibility of joint coordination in negotiations.
The Palestinian sources stated that Amro will meet with the secretary general of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Nayef Hawatemah, and the chairman of the follow-up committee of the Palestinian groups which oppose the Oslo agreement, Khaled al-Fahoum. They added that he also might be received by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa.
Syria has repeatedly criticized "the Palestinian out separate attitude in its negotiations with Israel," a matter which, Syria believes "has weakened the Arab negotiation position in general and contributed to the deterioration of the Palestinian track."
Damascus has repeatedly refused to receive Palestinian President Yasser Arafat because Damascus has been convinced that Arafat " does not abide by what has been agreed on, according to Syrian experiences with Arafat."
