Syria asks Israel for compensation and prisoners
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/29/1999
Syrian parliament member Midhat Saleh al-Saleh said he handed over on Monday to Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa a message from the people of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights who are expelled to Syria, in which they call on their FM to address the question of the 17 citizens of the Golan who are prisoners from the occupied part of the Golan during the next round of peace negotiations between Syria and Israel.
Al-Saleh stated that, "Many of those prisoners were arrested in 1985," adding that al Sharaa made his assurances that, "Syria will not forget its prisoners and they are on top of its priorities."
Al-Saleh himself was a prisoner of the Israelis.
Meanwhile, Western diplomatic sources in Damascus expected that Syria will submit, in a coming phase, a memorandum on the material losses inflicted on the Syrian evacuees from the Golan, according to its analysis of the speech made by al-Sharaa at the White House upon the convening of the first round of negotiations in December 15, as al-Sharaa recalled the attempts made to collect international sympathy with several thousands of Israeli settlers in the Golan and the total ignorance of almost half a million Syrian citizens who were evacuated from tens of villages in the Golan where their fathers and ancestors lived for thousands of years, and their villages were totally demolished.
