Jordan licenses new political party
Jordan, Politics, 12/28/1999
The Jordanian authorities have recently permitted the establishment of a new political party carrying the name of "the Jordanian Arab New Dawn" (al-Fajr al-Jadid al-Arabi al-Aurduni) to be the second party licensed in the kingdom since King Abdullah II ascended to the throne in February this year.
The Jordanian daily Jordan Times said the new party seeks in its programs to fight poverty and unemployment. It opposes the privatization programs carried out by the Jordanian government for more than one year and believes that Jordan should only encourage "local and Arab investments."
By licensing this new party, the number of parties officially recognized in Jordan reached 22, representing all political trends. The last of these parties under the name of al-Ajyal was licensed in November this year.
