Sudan: Expanded all-parties conference, proposed
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 12/27/1999

Foreign Minister Amr Moussa received on Saturday Sadek el Mahdi, leader of Sudan's Ummah Party and member of the opposition National Democratic Alliance.

Following the meeting Mahdi said the present conditions became more adequate than any time before to reach a comprehensive political solution to the conflict in Sudan.

He added he discussed with Moussa the steps which should be taken to convene an expanded conference grouping all parties so as to reach a radical solution to all problems.

"No date was so far set for this conference," Mahdi said but only noted that time is now adequate for convening this conference.

In reply to a question on the negative stance of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as regards President Bashir's call to return to Khartoum and form a national unity government, Mahdi said that as a result of traded accusations, there are always obstacles before parties involved in the crisis. "Days and measures will remove all that," he added.

On whether or not the expanded conference would be held within the framework of the Egyptian-Libyan initiative, Mahdi said of course it was the Egyptian-Libyan initiative that proposed and adopted that conference.

Stressing the necessity and importance of coordination between the Egyptian-Libyan initiative and that launched by the IGAD, he said that the states that launched the IGAD overture must have a role in what is going to happen.

Answering a question on the Alliance's stance as regards the recent changes in Sudan, he said that there are circumstances in Sudan that could be invested for reaching an overall political solution.

On an Egyptian role at present for reaching a reconciliation between Bashir and some NDA leaderships for supporting the Sudanese President, he said what is being prepared at present falls within the preparations for the expanded conference.

On the required US role in the coming stage, he said that the US is required to bless steps necessary for achieving peace and stability in Sudan and apply the overall political solution and avoid any plans that would lead to partial solutions.

"The US welcomes solidarity and cooperation of Sudan's neighbors," he added.
