Arab labor union denounces UN Security Council's last resolution concerning Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 12/27/1999
The general secretariat of the international federation of Arab trade unions has deplored the UN security council's adoption of the resolution no. 1284 providing for setting up a new arms inspection team in a way to substitute UNSCOM, while the UN embargo is still imposed on Iraq.
In a statement issued in Damascus on Sunday, the secretariat said the said UN resolution is vague and lacks standards for fulfillment. The statement added the said UN resolution was not adopted unanimously and therefore it raises deep concerns of nations connected with an encroachment upon national sovereignty of peoples, and it may undermine the prestige and credibility of the UN organization.
The federation categorically refused the "awkward UN resolution" and called on the UN to reconsider it and to work for lifting the embargo and ending the military campaigns on Iraq.
