King Mohammed condoles Algerian president over quake
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 12/23/1999

King Mohammed VI sent President Abdelaziz Bouteflika a condolence message following the earth quake that jolted Algeria, claiming 28 lives.

The king expressed sorrow and grief over the catastrophe and voiced sympathy with the families of the victims.

He voiced Morocco's readiness to assist Algeria in overcoming the painful event.

A strong earthquake rocked western Algeria on Wednesday, killing 28 people and injuring 175.

An official source said the quake, measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, shook several western provinces of the North African country.

In 1980, at least 2,590 people were killed when an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated the Algerian town of El Asnam, leaving 330,000 people homeless. The town was subsequently rebuilt and renamed Chlef.
