Syrian imports for the first half of 1999 estimated at 19 billion Syrian pounds
Syria, Economics, 12/23/1999
A report published by the Syrian Arabic Tishreen daily said that Syrian imports during the first half of this year are estimated at 19 million pounds and that most of the imports were made through the private sector, whose imports were estimated at a cost of 16.3 billion SP.
The paper added that therefore the private sector's imports for the same period were estimated at 2.7 billion Syrian pounds.
Tishreen reported that most of the imported items are for consumption rather than for use in production processes. It said cars and relevant spare parts were imported at a cost of 2 billion SP; 1.3 billion SP for sugar, cocoa and foreign tobacco imports and 1.8 billion SP for bananas, tea and coffee. The daily added, "It is regrettable to import industrialized textiles and cotton and wool fabrics at a cost of 1.9 billion SP, which is quite a large number, while the country has stores of similar cotton and textile fabrics."
The paper said that the private sector's exports for the same period are estimated at 4.9 billion, which means that the imports of the private sector are threefold more than its exports.
The paper added that South Korea is the first source for Syrian exports as Syria imports from South Korea reached 1.7 billion SP, then comes Ukraine whose exports to Syria are estimated at 1.4 billion SP, Italy 1.1 billion SP; and one billion SP each in Syrian imports from France and Turkey. The paper continued that Syria's imports from the US for the first half of this year were 701 million Syrian pounds, which are more than Syrian imports from Saudi Arabia, estimated at 565 million SP and from Lebanon 109 million Syrian pounds.
Syrian imports from Egypt are estimated at 222 million SO and 234 million SP for Syrian imports from Morocco, for the first half of 1999.
