Indonesian products marketed in Israel via third country

Indonesian Industry and Trade Minister Jusuf Kalla admitted on Tuesday that certain Indonesian products had already entered the Israeli market through a third country.

The minister was quoted by Indonesian news agency ANTARA as saying that, "Actually, we are already exporting (to Israel), not directly but through a third country."

The minister made the statement in connection with the impending arrival of an Israeli business delegation to Indonesia later this week.

In its efforts to widen the market access of its products, Indonesia can set up business relations with any country, he said.

"As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Indonesia cannot be discriminative," he said.

Asked whether the Israeli business delegation would meet him, Jusuf said no such a meeting was on his program.

"They (the Israeli delegation) would come to Indonesia to meet Indonesian counterparts," said Jusuf, who refused to clarify why it was not scheduled to meet any Indonesian government official.

Earlier, on a separate occasion, a deputy chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), Bambang Sujagad Susanto, had said business cooperation with Israel was still being hampered by a political problem, namely the absence of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

As a consequence, Bambang said, the Israeli business delegation's visit could not be expected to result in a clear picture of the business opportunities existing between the two countries.
