Moroccan media call Spain to follow Portugal's example in Macau and liberate Sebta and Melillia
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 12/22/1999

The Moroccan media have called Spain to follow the example of Portugal which put an end to 442 years of colonial rule in Macau and handed back the territory to China and end the occupation of the Northern Moroccan cities of Sebta and Melillia and the neighboring islands.

Moroccan papers of various trends have devoted comments to the event drawing a parallel between the occupation of Macau and that of Sebta and Melillia.

The example of Hong kong and Macau, they pointed out, evidences the imperative need to put an end to the last remnants of colonialism wherever they are.

The Moroccan papers called Spain to follow the edifying example of Portugal and underlined that the Spanish occupation of a part of Moroccan territory harms neighborly relations existing between the two countries which are called more than ever before to upgrade their economic cooperation.

The decolonization of the Moroccan cities must be operated according to an immediate agreement on a calendar enabling Morocco to gain sovereignty over its territories, the papers said stressing the need for the two countries to prepare together the decolonization conditions, to set up a cooperation strategy that would settle the issue of sovereignty, restore the rights of history and at the same time guarantee the social and political rights and the well-being of the inhabitants and the interests of the two countries.

Morocco has repeatedly called Spain to hand back the two cities and the late King Hassan II had suggested the setting up of a reflection group to ponder a solution restoring Morocco's sovereignty over the two cities and preserving Spain's interests.
