Bashar al-Assad to visit Iran
Syria-Iran, Politics, 12/22/1999

The Jordanian weekly al-Sabeel quoted well-informed sources in Damascus and Tehran as saying that Bashar al-Assad, son of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, will start within the coming days a visit to the Iranian capital on a political mission which was described by the paper as very difficult because Bashar will carry with him the "work agenda he will discuss with the Iranian leadership."

In a special report, the Jordanian weekly added that al-Assad will also carry a message from President Hafez al-Assad to the Iranian officials on resuming talks between Syria and Israel and will try to explain recent changes made by Syria towards the peace process.

Bashar al-Assad will assure to the Iranian officials that Syrian- Iranian relations will not be affected by any progress in the current peace process between Syria and Israel.
