Saudi, Egyptian and Syrian summit nearby
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 12/20/1999
Well-informed sources in Riyadh spoke about a Saudi, Egyptian and Syrian summit to be held shortly in Damascus to back the Syrian peace negotiator, revive the Lebanese track in the peace process, and prepare for convening a pan-Arab summit.
But the sources said that the Saudi-Egyptian talks have not yet crystallized a clear perception for a pan-Arab summit and that chances of a tripartite summit are much greater.
The sources noted similarities in conditions to the two tripartite summits. The first was held in Alexandria, Egypt and was attended by King Fahd, President Mubarak and President al-Assad, and the second tripartite summit was held in Lattakia, Syria and was attended by the Syrian and Egyptian presidents and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.
In Doha, conditions in Sudan were on top of the talks held between Mubarak and Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani.
In a statement to reporters in Doha, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said that talks dealt with "the Arab situation in general and in the Gulf area in particular, the Middle East peace process, the question of convening an Arab summit and the conditions in Sudan."
Meanwhile, Egyptian Information Minister Safwat al-Sharif noted the "identical viewpoints between Cairo and Doha over the need to find a common Arab vision in backing the Syrian negotiator in the context of UN resolutions 242 and 338."
This is President Mubarak's first visit to Doha since Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa assumed power in Qatar in 1995.
Well-informed sources said the visit aims at "opening a new page in the relations between the two countries."
Meanwhile, Bahraini Prime Minister Sheikh Khaleifa Bin Salman al-Khaleifa has welcomed President Mubarak's visit to Manama which will start today.
During a meeting of the Bahraini Cabinet on Sunday, Sheikh Khaleifa praised the role played by Egypt in serving the Arab states' issues, consolidating Arab solidarity, backing security in the region and maintaining its just and durable peace. He commended cooperation between Egypt and Bahrain.
For his part, the Egyptian ambassador in Manama, Muhammad Abbas, underlined the importance of Mubarak's visit to Manama. he indicated contacts to materialize the agreement for establishing a free trade zone between the two states into actual implementation.
