Report: US economic promises for Syria
Syria-USA, Politics, 12/18/1999
The London-based al-Hayat daily said in its Friday issue that sources close to the negotiations on the Syrian track described the negotiations as serious and said the negotiators and the US broker discussed fundamental issues such as withdrawal, security arrangements, the nature of peace and timing, all in their main headlines with the objective of defining the meaning of resuming negotiations from where they left off.
Meanwhile, the paper quoted diplomatic sources as saying that the US has promised Syria to provide economic aid and to encourage several Arab and foreign states to invest in Syria in case a Syrian-Israeli peace agreement is reached, a matter which will be conducive to removing Syria's name from the US list of the states sponsoring terrorism.
The sources stated that Washington has promised to give Syria economic aid to back and develop the Syrian economy and modernize it so as to keep up with international developments.
