Egypt calls for reform of UN Security Council

Egypt has called for making reforms to the UN Security Council and to increase its members with the objective of dealing with the imbalance existing at the present in the representation of the developing countries in the formation of the current council.
The council is composed of 15 members, 10 of them are elected by the UN general Assembly for two years besides the UN five permanent member states: the US, France, the UK, Russia and China.
Egypt also called for the abrogation of the veto right currently enjoyed by the said five permanent states in being does not comply with the world's inclination to adopt democracy as an attitude for contemporary international relations and its adverse impact on the role played by the UN security council and the credibility of its relations.
Egypt's permanent representative at the UN, Ahmad Abu al-Gheit, asserted in a speech before the UN General Assembly during its discussions on the reform and expansion of the UN Security Council Egypt's commitment to the stances of the Non-Aligned Movement, which calls for increasing the number of members of the council to at least 26 and to limit the authority of the veto in a way to abrogate it ultimately in the future.
Egypt also asserted its backing for the African position, which asks for two permanent seats for Africa to be chaired alternatively by certain African states to be chosen later.
Egypt also stressed the need of abiding by the principles of just geographical representation and equality in the sovereignty among nations as a basis for expanding the UN Security Council.
