AL follows up on UN consultations over Iraq
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 12/17/1999

Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid has asserted that the AL follows up with great interest on the current consultations being carried out by the UN Security Council over Iraq.

The AL chief added that he has assigned the chief of the AL mission in New York, Hussein Hasounah, to follow up on these consultations and to inform the permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council of the need to end the sufferings of the Iraqi people and the perpetuated UN sanctions against Iraq.

On the attacks waged by British and American warplanes against Iraq, the AL assistant secretary general for the Arab affairs, who is also in charge of the Iraqi file, Ahmad Bin Hali, said the AL "has called on the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities and to take necessary measures to halt the US and British attacks against Iraq."

For its part Iraq stressed on Thursday on the occasion of the anniversary of Operation Desert Fox that US and British warplanes have carried out almost 17,000 air raids since December 1998.

A military spokesman said the number of US and British sorties in the northern and southern parts of Iraq from December 17, 1998 until yesterday reached 16,848 sorties.

These sorties resulted within one year in 156 deaths, and 371 persons were reported wounded according to statistics made by AFP correspondents, using Iraqi military statements.
