Syrian-Israeli negotiations will not be at the expense of the Palestinians
Palestine-Regional, Politics, 12/17/1999

The secretary general of the PLO, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), has asserted that the Syrian-Israeli negotiations will not be at the expense of the Palestinians and that the success of peace tracks serves the establishment of a comprehensive peace.

In a statement to al-Sabah daily issued in Tunisia, Abbas added, "Washington's negotiations will not weaken our negotiation position because Palestine is the essence of negotiations. It is the key to peace and without settling the Palestinian questions there will be no peace or security in the whole region."

On his expectations of the result of the Syrian-Israeli negotiations, Abbas said, "I think matters between Syria and Israel are ripe in settling all pending matters. Hopefully all disputes between the two sides will be settled in a few months."

On what is new in the area of purifying the atmospheres with Syria and Lebanon, the Palestinian official said, "We have extended our hands to our brothers in Syria and Lebanon because matters connected to the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations are of great concern to them, and we hope to maintain coordination concerning them especially matters relating to the return of the refugees, the security and the borders."

He continued, "Egypt and Jordan have responded for coordination with us. And we are ready for all forms of cooperation and coordination with our brothers in Syria and Lebanon. If they stay are persistent not to coordinate (the Syrians and the Lebanese) every side will continue its negotiation trip on his own according to the references of the UN resolutions 242 and 338."
