On the Sudanese national conference
Sudan, Politics, 12/16/1999
The secretary general of the people's organizations at the Sudanese National Conference. Muhammad Hassan al-Amin. has announced that the party is no longer the ruling party of Sudan after President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and his supporters withdrew from it.
In a press conference he held on Tuesday in Khartoum, al-Amin said that the national conference is no longer the ruling party after the president of the republic and his partisans and deputies chose withdrawal from it by directing a blow against the ruling establishment.
Al-Amin, who is one of the very close aides to the secretary general of the national conference, Hassan Turabi, stated that the leaders of the national conference announced on Monday that as Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir declared a state of emergency and dissolved the parliament that al-Bashir and his supporters are no longer members in the national conference.
Al-Amin continued that the national conference has not decided yet to mobilize the people against the measures which were taken by al-Bashir, adding that members of the party are still committed to the oath of "loyalty to the conference's secretary general and that they are ready to fulfill his orders."
He stressed that his party does not intend to confront the presidential measures and wants to wait for a time to evaluate the situation.
