US investors called to get involved in Morocco's telecom liberalization process
Morocco-USA, Economics, 12/15/1999

Moroccan economy and finance minister, Fathallah Oualalou, has called American investors to take part in the underway liberalization process of Morocco's telecom sector which is booming.

Interviewed Tuesday by "The Washington Post," Oualalou says "I urge the United States to get more involved in the telecommunication field, especially since we are now considering privatizing the state owned "Ittisalat Al Maghreb."

He also says he hopes to see American businessmen actively contributing to the development of Moroccan telecom technology and "get involved in all sectors- industrial as well as agricultural."

On foreign investment development, Oualalou says "the selling of the 2nd GSM license to Medi-Telecom consortium for $ 1.1 Bln has stimulated greatly foreign direct investments due mostly to the fact that the operation was conducted in complete transparency."

Oualalou also traces the broadlines of Moroccan economy and development strategy, saying that the country, after a long structural adjustment program, is now endeavoring to maintain its macroeconomic balance, improve management and services in public administrations, modernize judiciary system and encourage private initiative.
