Morocco voices concern over delay in referendum
Morocco-UN, Politics, 12/15/1999
Morocco voiced concern over the delay in the referendum process in the Sahara and affirmed that the United Nations has already pinpointed those accountable for the delay.
"Morocco which remains attached to the (U.N.) settlement plan is concerned by the delay in the referendum process," Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa told the press following a meeting with U.N. Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, in New York on Tuesday.
Benaissa underlined that the United Nations has already pinpointed those who are behind the delay.
Kofi Annan received on Tuesday a Moroccan delegation, including besides Benaissa, Interior Minister, Ahmed Midaoui, Moroccan permanent representative to the U.N., Ahmed Snoussi, and ambassador in charge of coordination with the MINURSO, Mohamed Loulichki.
Benaissa conveyed to Annan King Mohammed VI's feelings of esteem and thanks for the efforts he exerts to reach a settlement to the Sahara issue.
Benaissa underlined the inalienable right of all applicants of Sahrawi origin to be identified and, eventually, to submit appeals as provided for in the relevant Security Council resolutions.
He renewed to Annan Morocco's determination to continue cooperation with the Secretary-General.
The Moroccan delegation also conferred with members of the Security Council on the situation in the Middle-East and other issues of common concern.
