Spanish socialist party wants alternative to Morocco's nuclear plant project
Morocco, Economics, 12/14/1999
Secretary general of the Spanish socialist labor party (PSOE) in the Canary Island, Juan Carlos Aleman, asked on Monday the autonomous government, the central government and the European Union to offer Morocco an alternative energy project to avoid the Moroccan project to build a nuclear plant.
He said criticism of the Moroccan project to produce much needed water is not enough, Spain should offer other alternatives.
The PSOE local leader met with Morocco's general consul in Las Palmas, Azzouz Abou Alkouroum, who renewed the kingdom's readiness to opt for another type of environment-friendly energy provided that it uses a feasible and economical technology.
The Spanish socialist leader who was briefed on the project argued that Morocco's needs in energy for development are legitimate and understandable and criticized the Spanish government and the European Union for failing to make up for Morocco's leniency on this issue.
Morocco is projecting to build in the southern city of Tan-Tan a 10-Mw reactor to produce a daily 8,000 cubic meters of water to supply some 70,000 inhabitants with drinking water.
The project, whose feasibility was approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency, will pave the way for the implementation of similar undertakings in the southern provinces to fight water scarcity in the area.
