El-Bashir: Conflict over power in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 12/14/1999
Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir, who dissolved the parliament and issued a state of emergency in Sudan, said this is to control the conflict over power with Islamist leader and Parliament Speaker Hassan Turabi.
He added that the procedures he took were not aimed at diminishing democracy, but that there are threats that threaten Sudan's security, sovereignty and unity, and that there are steps that must be taken to control these developments inside Sudan. He denied that there are disturbances in Sudan and said everything is normal, and legislative elections will be held, but their date has not yet been determined.
Sudanese Information Minister Ghazi Salah Al-Din announced that solving the parliament and imposing the state of emergency are two political measures in compliance with the constitution.
Al-Din indicated that these measures were only an attempt to settle the current political conflict, which has almost frozen the country and done harm to its legality, adding that these measures do not obstruct the current political developments or the efforts aimed at achieving reconciliation with the opposition.
Meanwhile, Sudanese television said that President al-Bashir has assigned Sudanese Minister of Justice Ali Muhammad Othman Yassin to coordinate with the political forces inside the country in order to amend the political alliance law stated in the Sudanese constitution.
