Tripartite Sudanese - Libyan - Egyptian summit in Cairo
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 12/14/1999
The Sudanese daily al-Sahafa has said that the Sudanese, Libyan and Egyptian presidents may hold a tripartite summit shortly in Cairo.
The paper quoted well-informed sources as saying that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir will head for Cairo within days to meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Hosni Mubarak.
The paper added that contacts are being currently made among the three capitals to set a date for the summit, which Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gaddafi proposed to convene in a message al-Bashir received on Saturday.
Gaddafi reiterated his country's determination to continue peace efforts in Sudan. He proposed the revitalization of the Egyptian- Libyan peace initiative which aims at bringing together the Sudanese government and opposition in a national conference.
Earlier, Khartoum appointed its representatives to the preliminary committees to the conference, whereas the opposition, which falls under the framework of the Democratic National Coalition, has not succeeded in nominating its representatives until now.
