Syrian delegation to Washington
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/14/1999
The BBC's correspondent in Damascus reported that well-informed sources said the delegation which will be led by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa to Washington for talks this week with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak will include Lt. Gen. Youssef Shakour as a political advisor; Siba Nasser, the director of the Europe department at the Foreign Ministry; Riyadh al-Dawoudi, legal advisor at the Foreign Ministry; and several technicians.
The correspondent added that during the coming hours the names of the military delegation which will accompany al-Sharaa to Washington will also be declared.
The correspondent also indicated the statement made by al-Sharaa during the joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and quoted al-Sharaa as saying that the successive rounds of negotiations after the inauguration of the negotiations in Washington this week will be also held in Washington or around it and not outside it.
The correspondent commented that it seems it is Syria's desire to have all the agreements under the supervision of the of the US Middle East peace process cosponsor, as happened during the agreement with the previous Israeli government which was called the "Rabin deposit."
