Egypt, Culture, 12/11/1999
The Supreme Council for Antiquities will set up a museum to host the archaeological pieces discovered in the Old-Kingdom cemetery recently excavated in Munshıat Ezzat, Daqahliya governorate.
Dr. Mohamed el-Saghir, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Department, said the museum cost to LE 8 million comes within the framework of the governmentıs all-out plan to set up 394 museums throughout the country.
He added that excavation works in the site took a long time starting in 1936 and that the 3500-year-old cemetery represents the period preceding the reign of King Menes and contains several tombs, houses and mummies.
El-Saghir elaborated that only four feddans of the cemetery which has an area of 400 feddans have been excavated and that work will be completed by 2000.
The museum will host statues that date back to the Old Kingdom, boards recording the daily life of the period, stone utensils and alabaster and pottery pots.
