Death toll of Fez collapsed building rises to 47
Morocco, Local, 12/11/1999

Forty seven people have been killed in the collapse early Wednesday of the five-story building in Fez, according to estimates that are almost final as there remains little hope to unearth more living persons from the rubble.

Rescue teams managed to unearth alive several survivors including a two-month old baby and a nine-year old girl. The teams are still at work on site.

Fifteen households of about 87 souls were living in the building that did not meet safety norms and that was to be vacated in 1998 under a city council decision relating to several illegal and anarchic houses and buildings in the area.

An investigation is underway to pinpoint responsibility and sanctions will be immediately taken, it was officially announced. King Mohammed VI monitored the rescue and relief operations and the supply to victims of medicare, housing, food and other necessities.
