Egypt-Regional-USA, Politics, 12/10/1999
US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has concluded her tour of the Middle East by meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Meanwhile, news reports said that the European Union's Middle East peace process envoy, Miguel Angel Moratinos, will start today a tour of the region.
The Egyptian president welcomed the resumption of negotiations on the Syrian track from the point where they broke off and expressed his hope that this step will result in achieving a tangible progress to reach a just and comprehensive peace providing for the restoration of the whole of the Golan, south Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories, according to the land-for-peace formula.
This was expressed during the meeting held on Thursday between Mubarak and Albright, in Sharm El-Sheikh in the presence of Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa.
In a joint press conference with Moussa, Albright said the "resumption of negotiations on the Syrian track is very encouraging" and that her country will give all what it can to give the Middle East peace process a push forward.
The US secretary of state also stressed the need to move on the Lebanese track in order to achieve comprehensive peace in the Middle East, adding that all tracks can proceed in special timetables relating to each track.
Albright criticized the Israeli settlement activity in the occupied Arab territories, saying that settlement is the main obstacle in the way of peace.
For his part, Moussa said that President Mubarak is very happy over the resumption of negotiations on the Syrian track from the point it stopped at, adding that the resumption of negotiations will be an additional force for the Palestinian and Lebanese tracks.
Mousa asserted the importance of Israel's commitment to a complete withdrawal from the Golan, south Lebanon and the Palestinian territories so as to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
On Thursday, Albright concluded her tour of the Middle East and left Egypt for Iceland.
On Thursday, Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz received a telephone call from Albright during which the two sides reviewed recent developments on the Middle East peace process and the agreement reached to resume negotiations on the Syrian track from the point it stopped at.
Meanwhile, Israeli Radio said that Moratinos announced on Thursday that he will start today a tour of the region which will cover Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and the Palestinian self-rule territories.
