Damascus removing or transferring 37 state-run companies directors
Syria, Politics, 12/10/1999

Well-informed sources in Damascus expected the release of decisions providing for removing or transferring several directors general of the state-run companies, so the total number of those directors will reach 37.

While Syrian government sources attributed these measures to "looseness in the administration," other sources said that the reasons are "reports by the inspection and auditing committee on the spread of corruption and the increase in stockpiling of products that cannot be marketed because they are not of good quality and spending public funds carelessly.

Several months ago the open and public campaign to fight corruption stopped, as efforts have been concentrated on "economic reforms" and "modernizing of the administration."

However, the economic committee in charge of choosing the directors general led by Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zoubi last week removed 16 directors general from their posts or transferred many of them to lower posts in the ministries they are affiliated to and assigned their deputies to monitor these establishments, which belong to the ministries of irrigation, transport and public construction.

The decisions covered the establishments of "the Syrian railways," Qasyon for building works and construction, Aleppo for cement industry, the general company for irrigation, the Euphrates dam company, the general company for phosphates, the general company for spinning and textiles, and the general establishment for land reclamation.
