Regional-International, Culture, 12/9/1999
The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has published a bilingual dictionary of Arabic and Fulani, a language widely spoken in West Africa and in other African regions.
An ISESCO statement said the dictionary, which comes in medium format in 150 pages, is part of its efforts to revive the languages of the African Muslim peoples. ISESCO also said it had recently published and Arabic-Hawsa dictionary.
The dictionary is prefaced by ISESCO Director General Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, who stressed that the Islamic organization is giving special consideration to languages spoken by Islamic peoples worldwide and has published books on teaching Islam and fighting illiteracy, in those languages.
ISESCO has likewise, held training sessions on the use of the Afro-Arabic typing machine devised by the Islamic organization, prepared studies on writing those languages in the Arabic script, promoted editing and translation in the languages of the Muslim peoples.
