Israel accepts Lahd's resignation from leadership of Israeli-allied militias
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 12/9/1999
News reports from the occupied part of south Lebanon said on Wednesday that the leadership of the Israeli occupation forces has accepted the resignation of Antoine Lahd from the leadership of the Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army militia.
The Israeli leadership agreed to accept the resignation Lahd submitted after he failed to convince the Israeli leadership not to withdraw from south Lebanon and leave his militia to an "unknown" future.
The news reports added that Lahd had repeatedly submitted his resignation in an attempt to force the Israeli occupation forces not to maintain the withdrawal announced by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and set a final date for it as July of 2000. When Lahd did not receive a hearing from the Israelis, he took his decision to quit the occupied part of South Lebanon to Paris as he has a French nationality passport.
The news reports added that Lahd received a sum of five million Israeli shekels withdrawn from a Tel Aviv bank in compensation for himself and several of his army officers for their services to Israel.
The news reports confirmed that SLA member Aqel Hashem who is trusted by Israel will succeed Lahd.
