Jordanian parliamentarians against Israeli participation in Amman's IPU conference
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 12/8/1999

The Jordanian weekly al-Majd said in its recent issue that a group of Jordanian parliamentarians will start as of next week to hold successive meetings to crystallize a united stand towards Israel's participation in the conference of the International Parliamentary Union, due to be hosted by Amman next April.

The Jordanian weekly added that those parliamentarians are seeking to prepare a memorandum to be submitted to Jordanian Parliament Speaker Abdul Hadi al-Majali, calling on him not to allow the participation of an Israeli Knesset delegation in the deliberations of the conference.

The weekly added that several Jordanian parliamentarians asserted that they will boycott the conference's opening session if Israel will take part in it, saying that Parliamentarian Khalil Ateyah has called on the parliamentarians in Jordan to submit a collective resignation in case Israel's participation in the conference is confirmed.

Ateyah said, "It is at any rate not justified to extend an invitation to Israel because the parliament represents the will of the Jordanian people who refuse normalization with the Israelis." Ateyah said, "Resignation is the simpler reply to the Zionist arrogance."

Parliamentarian Dr. Nazih Ammarin said he will boycott the activities of the conference if an Israeli delegation takes part, while parliamentarian Mahmoud al-Kharabesha said the "parliament is a popular establishment and is not concerned with normalization." He called on the general secretariat of the International Parliamentary Union not to extend an invitation to Israel.
