Egypt backs up UK campaign to reform WTO
Egypt-UK, Economics, 12/7/1999

The United Kingdom is getting ready to launch an international campaign to mobilize world support necessary for making radical reform in World Trade Organization (WTO). This comes with the failure of the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference in Seattle.

"The Guardian" yesterday reported that Egypt and North Africa support this campaign, affirming that what happened in Seattle is deemed to be a "catastrophe." It, further, held both US and the European Union (EU) responsible for such "catastrophe."

UK Minister of Trade and Industry Stephen Buyers said that WTO was pulling through decisive moments in view of freezing plans aimed to hold new talks on trade liberalization. "UK seeks to hammer out a new agreements to enable world countries to play more active role within the WTO," he added.

Buyers underscored the importance of providing technical support to increase negotiating experience in developing countries. He made it clear that Britain will make use of its relations with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to form an alliance between continents. He expounded that Britain will call on the European Union (EU) to take necessary measures to address the organizationšs deteriorating conditions.

It is expected, however, that UK will be supported by developing countries which seek to alleviate debts.
