Morocco among seeded nations in African World Cup preliminary heats

Morocco was chosen among the 25 African seeded nations for the preliminary heats of the 2002 World Cup, to be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea.

Morocco is in group A with Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal and Togo. Each of these teams will play a group of 5 other "weaker" teams, namely, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Benin, Guinea Bissau and Gambia.

The other seeded national teams are Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Gabon (Group B), Zimbabwe, Congo, Sierra Leone, Cote d'ivoire and Mali (Group C), Cameroon, Egypt, Nigeria DR Congo and Namibia (Group D) and Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia and Kenya (Group E).

The 25 teams that will survive the first round (one away and return match) will be drawn into two 5 groups of 5. the five nations that will top the five groups will qualify for the World Cup finals.
