Floods in Somalia
Somalia, Politics, 12/6/1999
Flood damage inflicted on the road network in Somalia has prevented the arrival of a 120-lorry caravan loaded with foodstuffs as relief aid to the victims of starvation, just 200 km south of Mogadishu on Sunday.
The World Food Program caravan left Mogadishu ten days ago, escorted by 12 armored vehicles, on its way to the districts of Bai and Bakoul which are devastated, but the drivers of the lorries failed to find the road conducive to the two districts.
Passengers who succeeded in leaving the city said that the floods in the Shbeili River have drowned thousands of dunnums of agricultural lands and that there is no hope of cultivating crops in the coming months.
In the lower Shbeili district in the south, heavy rainfall continued for one week and inflicted great damages in the city of Seblaleyah.
